You declare, I choose

12 Nov

This is crazy, I mean this
whole idea of conforming
to a set rule, to standards,
to ways of thinking, writing.

Why should I have to count words,
syllables before putting
them on paper. Will my poems be
any less effective if I failed?

If I grow up successful
and take the path less travelled
by choosing not to settle
down. Will that invalidate
my successes and triumphs,
reducing me to nothing?

Will I stick out like a sour
pickle in the midst of grapes?
Or like a poem, will I lack
the right count of accents and
syllables to accentuate
the prosody of my life?

But at the end of this race,
The race that is mine to run,
the home that is mine to build,
the poem that is mine to write,
I realize that I have a
choice and above everything
else, I choose to be happy.

I'd like to say, pieces that resonate but I'd be stealing Falz's 'Stories that touch' line. :)
